If you are looking for that great friendly country feel, find your home in the oldest town in Ellis County where most homes are located on a half acre or more. With great neighbors and a rural environment, the town is still close to all the conveniences in the metroplex with easy access to Interstate 35 or U.S. 287.
What began as a fortified settlement in 1844, Ovilla grew into a vibrant community in the early 1900s boasting a post office, bank, dry goods stores, a cotton gin, pharmacy, bank and blacksmith shop. A few old structures remain in the downtown area, but fires in 1918 and 1926 destroyed most of its downtown area.
Ovilla incorporated in 1963 to avoid annexation by neighboring cities and has grown from its first census population of 339 to an estimated 4,000 residents.
Tucked away from the stress of the city, Ovilla’s charm provided scenes for several episodes of Walker Texas Ranger starring Chuck Norris.
Ovilla is a town proud of its past and excited about its future.
